"Having lived a life immersed in physical sciences, I now find myself drawn by an irresistible appeal to the mystical shorelines of the hidden sea," Malik (A Perspective on the Signs of Al-Quran, 2010) writes. Such watery metaphors pervade the author's language as he expounds on various parables in the Surah Kahf. A central story has Moses--the Quran's most-mentioned prophet--setting out to find the meeting place of two seas. While this might be a real place, this is also a mystical journey to the union of heart and mind. Moses' companion on the quest for knowledge, Khidr, impairs a boat, kills a boy, and then--in a sudden merciful turn--repairs a crumbling wall. For Moses, it's a lesson in unquestioning obedience, even when God's will doesn't make sense. As Malik observes, this is like the journey of faith: the big picture is usually hidden from mortals. Another key parable concerns some young men who take refuge inside a cave and, Rip Van Winkle-like, emerge to find that centuries have passed. Malik cleverly links this example of "time dilation" to quantum physics' concepts of time and space while also invoking metaphors of resurrection. Bypassing the usual quagmire that results when religion tries to disprove science, he instead imagines the two coexisting. Indeed, his modus operandi throughout this learned guide is to seek intersections between two ideas: empirical and subjective; free will and predestination. "To those who have made the plunge" of faith, Malik insists, those seemingly contradictory pairs become a nonissue. The book, written in an inviting first-person plural, makes scholarly comparisons between different translations of the Quran (in italics, with footnote references), accompanied by Arabic script and color images. Erratic hyphenation is a rare stylistic flaw in an otherwise fluid text. Dense with details, this impressive volume rewards a slow, meditative reading.

The Confluence of Two Seas: Real and Mystical

The Quran abounds in parables. The chapter densest with parables in the Quran is the eighteenth chapter called Al-Kahf or The Cave. Each parable in “The Cave” can engage the intellect and the spirituality of a believer for years but there is one that is suffused with such mystical meaning that it may exhaust an entire lifetime without giving up its hidden treasures. This is the one where Prophet Moses travels with his servant to meet with a divinely-inspired teacher at the confluence of two seas.
In “Meeting of the Two Seas: Where the heart leads the mind,” author Saeed Malik dives deep into the meeting point of the two seas and poetically, as well as rigorously, attempts to explain how an understanding of it can inform a believer’s quest for knowledge, both empirical and spiritual.
It is an audacious undertaking, one almost breathtaking in its daring, and it pleases this reviewer to state without reservation that Malik has succeeded admirably. Fusing the worldly with the sacred and the mystical with the manifest requires solid interdisciplinary scholarship founded on the fertile soil of faith, imagination and wonder. With words that never give in to sentimentality but that unabashedly proclaim the supremacy of the intuitive heart over the analytical mind, without in any way undermining it, Malik offers a deeply moving book that can only be savored through long stretches of reflection and contemplation.
“Only the heart that is humble,” Malik writes, “open and conscientious, can hope to obtain access to the mystical depths of the Quran.” One is rarely born with such qualities, especially with regard to understanding, and acting on, Divine Text. The humility required to plumb the depths of sacred, immutable words in all their glory can come about only through earnest seeking and complete immersion. In a digital age where multitasking is the norm and one is everywhere yet nowhere, such immersion requires unshakable faith and a deep hunger to be one with the Creator. Malik’s achievement with “Two Seas” is that he shows us how even ordinary believers can aspire to such a state.
Malik touches on many parables and allegories contained in the Quran, describing them not as items in a list but as living and breathing words that can guide anyone seeking to be guided through life’s perilous journey. In particular, to suggest the ineffable, he quotes extensively from Rumi, the mystical Persian poet whose Mathnawi, translated by Coleman Barks into 22 volumes, has made him the best-selling poet in America.
While Malik explores several themes in his book – the nature of time, the temporal and the eternal, the secular and the sacred, life and death – it is the stories and the allegories of “The Cave” that constitute the heart of the book.
One example from the chapter “The Companions of the Cave,” with several memorably-titled subsections such as “Worthy Prayers,” “The Promised Hour,” “Call to Essence,” “Trust the Divine Plan,” and “Transcendental Facts are not Figures,” will suffice. The story of the companions of the cave can perhaps be best understood if we heed Rumi’s advice to “sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment” to escape the tyranny of time. Here are the two Quranic verses that describe them: “And We strengthened their hearts so that they stood up and said, ‘Our Sustainer is the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth. Never shall we pray to any deity other than Him, (for if we did), we would indeed have uttered an enormous untruth! These, our people, have taken to worshiping other deities beside Him, though they come with no clear proof for them! Who then could do more wrong than he who invents a lie about God?’” (Al Quran 18:14-15).
As Malik points out, it is possible that Rumi was moved to comment on these two verses thus: “Even with all its vulnerabilities and weaknesses the heart cannot lie; for all its alleged powers, the intellect cannot but lie.”
So what can a believer make of the journey that Prophet Moses undertake to reach the place where the two seas meet? As Malik writes, “We too are at the defining nexus of two seas. There is our inner sea of character and aspiration, defining who and what we are to ourselves and to God and our outer sea of expression and action, defining our interaction with fellow creatures and the world around us.”
At the beginning of “Two Seas,” Malik includes a chapter called “A Few Definitions.” I found this chapter to be exceptionally helpful. Particularly for those not familiar with the nuances of certain words as used in the book, the usefulness of this chapter cannot be overstated.
If there is one concern I have about “Meeting of the Two Seas,” it is that it demands much from readers. It demands that readers be attentive, that they have the capacity for introspection, and that they are able to look beyond the self to experience the mysterious and the transcendent. If they meet these requirements, however, the journey through the book’s approximately 300 pages will be immensely and indescribably rewarding.

Saeed Malik’s “A Meeting of Two Seas” brings forth the serenity that is the spiritual Quran. It takes the reader on a journey of understanding the spirit of the Quran; that it was not brought down to Mankind just as a proscription as to what to do and what not to do, as a compendium of laws of inheritance, evidence and contracts etc. or as a charter of moral and ethical conduct that must be followed at the risk of suffering eternal damnation, but to provide a map of God’s highway for the creation to join the Creator. As the reader joins Moses on his travels and travails, the reader may discover that Moses’ meeting with God was not just to bring down the Ten Commandments for mankind to follow, but to present a key of knowledge that would lead to bonding with God Himself.
For the reader “A Meeting of Two Seas” provides more than a tantalizing morsel of knowledge. As the author puts it: “Knowledge because it has no limits, is always a quest. With every new bit of its acquisition, it reveals teasing tips on new icebergs. For all that we know today, we know very little, and with every small bit of discovery, the mystery only deepens”.
“A Meeting of two Seas” is about a journey which Moses undertakes with Khidr. "Though this journey is short, it continues to open doors to others through our awakening to the meetings of many sets of two seas around us…” While the author identifies many a pair: “the manifested real and the hidden real… the temporal and the eternal…the empirical and the spiritual… the physical cause and the Spiritual cause..” it challenges the reader to find other pairs for "his heart and mind to meld” in the Oneness and Wonders of God.
The author also delves into the mystery of the cave that engulfed travelers fleeing from persecution. Centuries went by as the travelers slept. The Author uses his background in the sciences to surround the reader with the mysteries of time and space, of worm holes and black holes and of the relativity of time as he brings home the point that in the grand scheme of things it is the spiritual connection with God that matters and not the event, nor its timing.
In the “Meeting of two Seas” the author takes along the 12th century Persian mystic, poet and Saint Jalal Uddin Mohammad Rumi as a guide to the 6th century Arabic Quran and by doing so exemplifies what rewards await when the two seas of Persia and Arabia meet. “The Quran is not an inert book but an active agent of change” and for the reader “A Meeting of two Seas” is an eloquent invitation to embark upon a journey of understanding and enlightenment.

A worthy read...

In its ability to connect modern-day logic and spiritual awakening, Meeting of two Seas goes beyond any traditional scriptural interpretation in a way that captures both the heart and mind of any reader--it certainly captured mine. Perhaps because I was primed with Saeed Malik's first book, A Perspective on the Signs of Al-Quran: Through the prism of the heart, I was able to better connect with the wisdom and depth beneath small Quranic parables and find applications in my day-to-day life. A wonderful read for anyone wishing to understand the beauty of true Islam (submission to God), free of dogma and fundamentalist rhetoric. A must-read for anyone like me who was born into the faith, but is seeking to understand and potentially form a new (or a first) relationship with the Quran.
