This is the updated and reissued 1985 edition of Stein's seminal 1957 book, "Vassouras", an academic study of a 19th century coffee plantation in Brazil. It is interesting for the Brazil scholar, accessible, and thoroughly-researched. This edition has photos that give readers a bit more sense of time and place than the original book.
Vassouras is a town in the interior of Rio de Janeiro state. From about 1820 to 1900, it arced from backwater to a cradle of fabulous nouveau wealth based on monoculture coffee production, and back again. Its rise and fall were based on two elements: access to virgin forest land which could be cleared to plant coffee bushes and access to slave labor to work the enormous plantations. Both land and laborer were brutally abused, and by 1888, when Brazil became the last country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery, Vassouras's farmland was nearly sterile for lack proper farming techniques. In the years to come, neighboring Sao Paulo state became the next (and still) coffee king of Brazil, as it adapted modern agriculture and wage labor.
Stein's classic work remains fresh today, a fascinating look at slavery-era plantations and shortsighted farm management. Explanations of an ossified and polarized society that reproduced patterns of colonial plantations --a farm model that continues to skew Brazilian land patterns today-- are insightful. As Vassouras planters saw their assets evaporate as their labor force and acreage plummeted in value, the foundation for an entire economy collapsed. Their choices brought about this collapse, and Stein is able to chronicle them in detail.
The work is strong, but suffers from a grating failure common to academic works that are converted into mass publications: maps. The book has no good maps. The sole map is a near-useless rendering of the hills around Vassouras. But the book deals at length with roads and railways and the annual odyssey of transporting crops to Rio, with immigration from Minas and Sao Paulo states. A dozen clear maps would have made this book much better.

Vassouras is a Brazilian province reputed to be one of the richest coffee producing areas between 1850-1890. In his book of the same name, Stein uses this province as a model through which the rise and fall of coffee plantations during that era may be observed. The main themes of the book were the plantation lifestyle, the shortcomings of plantations owners as managers, the difficulties faced with coffee production and trade, and the rise and fall of the coffee industry in Vassouras. I believe that the writer's intention was to reveal how the resources and the opportunities afforded to plantation owners were ill managed and misused during the brief period of prosperity.
In financial transactions, land use and coffee production, the blunders of the fazendieros and the coffee society at large were exposed. The author summarized his sentiments by stating, `The prosperous edifice erected by coffee planters in the years immediately preceding and following 1850 held within it elements of destruction.' (page 213) Stein effectively brings the view that coffee production in Vassouras was fraught with lack of forethought as evidenced by the rapid and irreconcilable decline of the economy. Attached to the main themes were reports that gave a glimpse into the daily lifestyle and the routine of plantations. The details supplied were very successful in giving a clear, visually dynamic illustration of the town of Vassouras, the plantation house and the coffee fields in terms of physical appearance, daily activities and even special occasions. There was a reasonable degree of balance of the themes discussed as far as it concerned the relations between masters and slave and, barring to the shortcomings of the fazendieros, the insurmountable obstacles that were faced such as transportation of goods to Rio de Janeiro and climatic conditions. It is an excellent source for almost any information concerning coffee plantation life during that period. There was some bias against the fazendieros however, I believe that the account given was reasonably fair and, with the evidence given, that bias seems totally justifiable.
I was greatly impressed by the author use of sources mainly because there was quite a large amount of primary sources used. Primary sources included newspapers, oral interrogations, proceedings from Agricultural Congresses, documents stored in archives of Vassouras and national archives and information stored at notarial offices such as police reports, wills, advertisements, sales of goods, posters and pamphlets. This enabled the author the report specific details of the fazenda architecture, purchases daily routines and interactions between members of the province. There was very limited use of secondary sources.
For descriptions of the fazendas, mostly documents obtained in the archives were used and fortunately plantation owners were very thorough with their records. These details served to enhance the images construed by the reader. For example the inventory of the fazenda belonging to Antonio Vieira Muchacho in 1825 (page 23) details furniture, tools and household items. Inventories complied later in the century were used to show the increase in prosperity in the Province by 1850, as in the case of the inventory of the household of Polucena d'Oliveira Serra (page 44). In reading the book I sometimes found it difficult to put things in perspective as it related to time. Whether it was master-slave relation, purchase of new machinery, methods of recapturing slaves or the departure of townsmen there was insufficient mention of how it related to aforementioned themes such as transportation. It was not easy to use the development of a particular chain of events as a timeline for another, for hardly was any mention of other aspects of the society alluded to when any one theme was being discussed.
If a topical search for information in the book implemented, it would be useful in its present format. However the format falls short if it is used for a clear, chronological picture of events unless the reader is familiar with events which took place in Brazil in the latter half of the 19th century.

A Summer Reading Assignment That is in Fact Interesting

I was instructed to read The Courage of Their Convictions as a summer reading assignment for AP US Government. Usually, I dread reading summer assignments, but this book was written in a way that made the cases relatable and interesting. I appreciated the fact that it had first hand accounts of the major player in each of the suits, the person who was defending their freedoms as an American. It wasn't written in a complex way, the text had a good flow to it. I felt like I was getting a proper idea of how the Supreme Court actually runs, and overall it was a worthwhile read.

Peter Irons, The Courage of Their Convictions (1990)

I have used this book three times in UC and CSU public law classes have taught: Intro to Judicial Process, Intro to Judicial Politics, and American Government. It is a personalized, almost biographical approach to leading constitutional rights cases, replete with the "human" as well as "legal" story behind each of the 16 cases. Though short on some of the important legal arguments at the Supreme Court level, it covers well the dispositons and judicial personalities of the lower courts. More importantly, however, it deals with the suffering and courage of the litigants themselves.
As such, it is a terrific book for both introductory American Government and judicial politics/process courses at the college level.
I have also used Irons' new book JIM CROW'S CHILDREN in my upper division course on Racial Equality and the U.S. Supreme Court at U.C., Irvine, just this summer.

The Courage of Their Convictions: Sixteen Americans

This was a fantastic book! People may know about some Supreme Court decisions and its impact but I do not think people understand why such important cases were brought before the Supreme Court. We never learn in school who these people were, (they are everyday people) and exactly how much courage and determination it takes to fight your case to the Supreme Court (after all I think S.C hears about 1% of all cases filed to the Court). Irons is an academic but boy you can read this in a day-this is not a dreaded book you are assigned to read for school.

Mindblowingly amazing book for first-timers to web development using Java

I've taken a few intro to web development using Java courses. I have even taken some Spring courses. No one was able to explain basic concepts of JSPs, servlets, controllers, beans, and server engines as well as Mr. Downey.

Despite having taken courses for this material, I was still lost trying to plug my way through all the different parts that make up a web project. This book clarified absolutely everything. I went from spending a whole week trying to debug a problem to what is now an hour or two max of troubleshooting. I went from being completely miserable and pissed at my job to having a blast of a good time.

I've actually also learned more about how Spring works, because now I fully understand all of the concepts that Spring is trying to replace/simplify/rework.

As far as I'm concerned, Tim Downey is a master at imparting knowledge through his writing, diagrams, and examples. All the information is organized and progresses in a logical, common-sense manner. So many other books skip over topics assuming the reader knows all about them, leaving people lost and unable to progress due to missing key pieces of information. With this book, I feel like I am receiving complete knowledge of all the topics.

I cannot recommend this book enough, at least to complete Java noobs trying to learn how to build a web site using Java.

First, excuse my English. I'm french speaking

Transmitting knowledge is an art that only exprienced teachers can do.
If you are a beginner, this book is for you. What i like the most of this book is the fact that the author is a experienced teacher who is aware of what newbies (like me)need to process new information.
The exercises after each chapters are very useful and that is the second reason why i bought this book (the first reason being the fact that the author is a teacher).

Preface

This book came about from a conversation in the Hotel Mercure bar in Brussels, Belgium. We had just finished the first day of client training in our Bluetooth solution, and hadn't said a single word about our implementation yet! Why? Well, Bluetooth was so new that nobody knew much about it, there were no textbooks, no courses, nothing but a thick specification document and a few white papers. So before we could begin to explain the fine details of what we'd done, we had to spend a day explaining the Bluetooth specification. After the first beer, we thought somebody ought to write a book about Bluetooth; after the second beer, we thought we should do it; after the last beer, we had a contents page.

Why the title? Well, "Connect without Cables" is basically what Bluetooth started out doing. It's a short range wireless communication system, and the word "wireless" pretty much says it all. The first applications people came up with were all about throwing away the clutter of cables that plagues modern portable devices—Bluetooth took away the cable dangling from a headset, removed the clutter of wires at the back of a PC, and let a phone talk to a PDA without needing a cable that took up more pocket space than either device. Now there are more imaginative uses than straight cable replacement, from small wireless office networks to the much hyped Personal Area Network, or PAN. But the basic functionality that Bluetooth provides is still the same: connection without cables.

During the last year or so, we have seen a Bluetooth system design evolve from abstract idea to evaluation board. Along the way, we struggled to understand the Bluetooth specification. Some parts of it don't make sense until you've read later parts, some parts don't make sense until you've tried them out, and some of the parts we started with will never make sense and have since been corrected. The specification is in a much better state than the preliminary versions we started with, but like all such things, it's still not an easy read. So this book aims to provide people working with Bluetooth an easier introduction than the one we had.

A new version of the Bluetooth specification (version 1.1) is due to be published during the 4th quarter of 2000. In order to keep this text consistent, we only consider the existing version 1.0B specification except for one or two proposed corrections for v1.1 which are especially worth mentioning here. Although these are mostly minor improvements and clarifications to the existing 1.0B specification, it is important for the reader to keep abreast of any revisions particularly since there may well be other refinements before the major evolution which Bluetooth 2.0 will represent. An excellent Bluetooth resource.

Connect Without Cables is the best of the current books for developers and implementers who are making their way through the complexities of the specification for Bluetooth wireless technology. The authors take the us through the multiple levels from RF through real world applications in a consistent and insightful fashion. Additional sections help the reader understand the context of the technology and hint at its exciting potential in the marketplace.
I found this book to be much less of a walk through the specification and more of a view through the eyes of one who has actually implemented Bluetooth and knows where the trouble spots are. The reader is given insights into some of the real thorny issues, and even given suggestions on how to address them.
Although the subject matter is at some times quite dense, the authors do an excellent job, consistently introducing the topics in an overview, and always following with a good summary of the salient points in each section. Readers in the USA should be prepared for an occasional non-American term, phrase, or spelling which may not be listed in the text's extensive and otherwise quite useful glossary, reminding us that Bluetooth wireless technology is truly of global interest and potential impact.

About the Author
Ronald Miller is Emeritus Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. His teaching and research interests have been in the field of cognitive development with a particular focus on learning and change, especially in relation to academic literacy and access to higher education, and he has been involved in the study of Vygotsky and Piaget's theories for over 30 years.

Clearly written.

The book is very clearly written and brings to the fore some interesting issues regarding the veracity of contemporary representation of Vygotsky's work. At times however Miller gives the impression that he has the real goods and others like Wertsch,Coles, Ratner have only the distorted version. Miller's view is in it's own way just as much of a take on Vygotsky as the other authors he criticizes. His claim that Vygotsky's understanding and critique of Piaget was of the early Piaget and not the late Piaget is a case in point. If anything, Vygotsky's criticisms are even more cogent and salient with the later Piaget as he gave even more emphasis to endogenous factors in development than earlier on. Still Miller is worth reading even if only for all the dust he throws up.
My impression is that Miller is de Marxifying Vygotsky. If so then the reality check is that Vygotsky wasn't just a Marxist for reasons of expediency, but would never have been able to construct his work without the influence and direction of Marx and Engels. True he critically drew on a number of other European thinkers including Spinoza,Hegel, James and Dilthey, but this doesn't negate his Marxist credentials nor place him in the same stable as the later Piaget.
