Loved it and couldn't put it down!

I have to start by saying that the cover is GORGEOUS! If I was choosing a book by it's cover, I would definitely pick this one! I absolutely loved this book! I could not put it down! Anything with a prince and princess is usually a winner for me, but this book is even better! It has multiple princes and princesses on scene over the course of the book! I was completely drawn into Kit's world as she was faced with danger and new circumstances. I felt for her and she was unsure of herself and I cheered for her when she grew and became the person she was meant to be. I was happy that Kit was a strong character, not a weak and simpering girl who couldn't do anything for herself. The Thief Prince (Andric) was a great character as well! I kept seeing glimpses of who he really was and I loved that the author gave us clues as to what he like under the surface. The Thief Prince will whisk you away into a new world that you will not want to leave! I hope that Ms. Alsop has more about this story to write, because I would love more Kit and Andric! This is one of my favorite books so far this year! Five stars!

Amazing read

I got this book at a writers' conference and wasn't sure about it, but I desided to give it a chance. Once I started I couldn't put it down. The story is amazing. The plot is new and the action never stops. The characters are believeable and the emotions presented are beautiful and real.
If anyone wants a good, clean, fun, romantic read. Look no further. I hope there will be more books set in Denbria, or better yet Antor.

This book was a wonderful chance to relax and get lost from the cares of thee world. I loved the main character Kit. She was very easy to love. The story was a nice read with no inappropriate language whatsoever. That I greatly appreciated. Thank u Cheree! :)

A former law enforcement officer and paratrooper, David "Bo" Bolgiano served multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division and Special Operations Forces. Legally Aware, Combat Savvy, Victory Oriented

As a veteran of one of the wars of the title, I have experienced the sinking feeling that comes when you recognize that elements in your own command are more concerned about the welfare of your enemies than their own troops. Bo and Jim have written a remarkably insightful book about why this happens, how this happens, and how to stop it.

I consider the chance that Big Green will adopt these wise prescriptions to be approximately zero. The chance that they will retaliate against the authors is unity, 1:1. They knew the career consequences and had the courage to go to press... they'd be up for a Profiles in Courage award, if their conclusions were politically correct. Readers may be grateful that their conclusions were not; it makes for a much more readable book.

Both of the authors are military lawyers, but (you know what I'm going to say, like when your buddy shows up with a pair of strippers -- "but they're not like all the others." But in all seriousness, these guys are not like all the others). They come out of the special operations community, where even the lawyers have to contribute to mission accomplishment positively or hit the bricks. Military lawyers have been key to some of the most bandwidth-wasting pseudo-scandals, and have -- sua sponte, as it were -- made a complete hash of rules of engagement. For illustration's sake, the authors provide an intricate, complex graphic of how a private in contact should escalate force. A document that could only have been drafted by someone who sits behind a desk fiddling with powerpoint and has not interacted much with combat arms troopers.

The problem isn't just the lawyers, though. Lawyers are still subordinate to commanders, and too many commanders hide behind their staff judge advocates and punish unfavorable reports, the same risk-aversion technique employed by the ostrich. Perhaps it works for the ostrich (hard to argue with natural selection) but it's bad policy for human beings and human organizations.

The book is brief, and readable, but it is deep and has added more things to my reading list. It has also explained a few combat-zone "What in the name of Niffelheim were they thinking?" moments. If you, like me, are a combat veteran you will find a grim snort or chortle at least every few pages. Grim because it's not really funny, ha-ha. You need to buy and read this book, and the greater the leadership authority entrusted to you, the more you need to read it. You need to buy it for your SJA, especially if he or she is that freshly-minted captain who's trying to apply 500 years of just war and use of force theory through the funhouse prism of fresh law school. If you are one of the folks the author derides as "certain elements of the JAG Corps...pipe-smoking intellectuals that never were warriors, and despise those who were...." you need to buy all the copies of this book you can find lest your next commander read it, and expect mission-oriented operational thinking from you.

If you're a policy maker or policy staffer, you need this book to see how the organization is failing the men and women trying to make it work, and start to brainstorm solutions.

Finally, if you're still serving as a combat troop, the section on the Law of Self-Defense is clear and concise and may save you, when one of those "certain elements" decides that making an example of you for a combat decision is his path to a fat post-retirement paycheck at Covington and Burling or elsewhere in the al-Qaeda bar.

As every war winds down there are analytical books that are talked about in professional circles, and that empower rising young leaders to avoid the errors they suffered from. After Vietnam, they included Crisis in Command: Mismanagement in the Army and Self-Destruction, the Disintegration and Decay of the United States Army During the Vietnam Era. As in the 1970s, we have an excellent force that needs a leadership tune-up. I'm not sure what other books will emerge from our ten years of fighting Islamist terrorism and timid leadership, but one of them will definitely be Fighting Today's Wars.

This book took a lot of courage for the co-authors to write. Now, if only our military, civilian, Congressmen, leaders will read this and change their present policy. Well written and contains a lot of history of our former battles and how they have affected our country. How PRESIDENT OBAMA needs to step up and think about these brave men and women who go to fight for our country. One of these co-authors is my son, James M. Patterson - I found out a lot of info about what he has been doing these past 33 years - true to his duty, he has been very close-mouthed about all his training, etc.

This book is required reading for anyone seeking to understand the issues of today facing the U.S. military and the individual solider. Not certain if soldiers should be used for non-military missions, such as "nation building"; the risks and issues regarding such issues as rules of engagement and "risk aversion"; and the legion of legal issues facing the private and the commander in today's battle space? But Paul had expressed a desire to preach the Gospel to those whom the name of Christ was not known. There can be no question that Paul had heard of the "Tin Islands" because the Romans had already conquered the greater part of Britain. The apostle could have met many in Rome and elsewhere who had been there either as traders or with the Roman army. Fabulous work and very, very possible!!!

There is a very good case made for this Lost Chapter being authentic, one reason some scholars think that the Book of Acts is incomplete is, that of the New Testament only Acts and one other (James) does not end with Amen. One more interesting fact is this writing is written in the same "manner" as Acts, many other interesting points are made for authenticty of this writing and the reasons as for it not being published are also pointed out. If you do not believe that this is God's word, you will at the least find it very, very interesting. I highly reccomend this book and when we meet our Father, it would not surprise me if this "Lost Chapter" is true after all.

Compelling and fascinating history worth the read

The historical information packed into this little book was worth the money spent on it. Fascinating to read this gives insight into the Apostle Paul and his life you won't get anywhere else. Is this really the "Lost Chapter of Acts"? I don't know. But the history Capt gives makes a compelling case. Names from the Bible come alive as never before. Take the time and read this little book.

Obviously Fake

E. Ramond Capt is an otherwise thorough and competent scholar, except for this book. The so-called Chapter 29 of Acts also fooled the late William Eugene Scott, PhD (from Stanford U). The manuscript is obviously a forgery written by British Israelite types who were overzealous to show a connection to the Celts and the Lost Tribes of Israel. I think there's enough evidence without having to defend this obvious fake. Here's the verses of this chapter I have a problem with: 29:13 "And it came to pass that certain of the Druids came unto Paul privately, and showed by their rites and ceremonies they were descended from the Jews [Judahites] which escaped from bondage in the land of Egypt, and the apostle believed these things, and he gave them the kiss of peace." Druids were NOT Jews! They were heathen Pagans who practiced divination with human entrails, worship of idols and trees, sorcery, and human sacrifice by such methods as burning people alive (The Wicker Man). If Paul saw these things and decided the Druids were Jews, he must have been really drunk! People who try to defend this manuscript will point out "It was found by a Frenchman", as though that made a difference, since the French are Celts too, and have perhaps an even stronger identification with the Druids than do the British. It's quite strange only one copy of this lost chapter has ever turned up at a time when British Israelism was at a peak. During the 19th century, there were spurious lost books turning up everywhere - The Book of Mormon, The Book of Abraham, the Gospel of Aradia...and all fakes. 'Gavrielides and Artinopoulou propose a reconstructed philosophy of restorative justice that is much more expansive and inclusive, much less either/or, than the usual approach. For the restorative justice movement to progress, they argue, we first must reconcile the internal tensions identified by the authors in this volume: conceptual, philosophical, political, personal. Their proposed reconstructed philosophy helps point a direction but in addition, they also suggest some rules for moving in this direction, asking those of us working in and advocating for restorative justice to redirect some of our energies. About the Author
Theo Gavrielides is an international expert in restorative justice, human rights and criminal justice and an advisor and project manager for EU and international programmes. He is the Founder and Director of The IARS International Institute and the Founder and co-Director of the Restorative Justice for All Institute (RJ4All). He is also an Adjunct Professor at the School of Criminology (Centre for Restorative Justice) of Simon Fraser University as well as a Visiting Professor at Buckinghamshire New University. Professor Gavrielides is the Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed International Journal of Human Rights in Healthcare, as well as of the Youth Voice Journal and the Internet Journal of Restorative Justice. He has published extensively in the areas of restorative justice, human rights, youth justice, equality and criminal justice. Glad I Read This

Curiously whenever I think of Gloria Grahame I see her in terms of a movie seductress. This book manages to flesh out her film, tv, and stage career and I realized that my perception is predictable in that she managed to get cast in that role a whole lot. Author Lentz manages to do a credible job of analyzing her performances with reference to what was going on in her life at the time. Whether it is a valid technique I can't say, but I found it interesting. I didn't know all that much about Grahame except what I learned from the movies and what I've managed to unearth on fan sites on the Internet. That combined knowledge got me to buy and read this book.
Obviously, the basics from which all good scandals come from are there. Lots of husbands, lots of lovers, bedding a stepson which even today would have constituted statutory rape and then later marrying the former stepson and having two kids by him before ending it 12 years later and moving on to other relationships. This is rough stuff even by Hollywood standards. Gloria was definitely a hot number.
This book was loaded with things that on the face of it seemed improbable like a first marriage to Bowery Boy Stanley Clements followed by one to tough guy director Nick Ray (the cuckholded hubby with the curious son). She was a relative through marriage to her co-star Robert Mitchum. Not earth shattering, but def. interesting. She wasn't English, but her mother was. Lots of random stuff that I wasn't aware of.
Grahame weathered a lot of career roadblocks. MGM was clueless as to how to promote her and use her, Howard Hughes basically ignored her when she was under contract to him which seemed to be the shared fate of many actresses under contract to Hughes.
I often wondered about the smoldering femme fatale with the literal stiff upper lip and the odd voice. Great story about how she came by the lip, who was responsible, and how obsession gave her that identifying feature.
Grahame died in 1981 from cancer that she was in denial over. She would have been about 58. If she were here today and spared the indignity of death I wonder how the public would view her and what would her future hold when she was pushing 89. It is hell to think of her as a great grandma. When she managed to break away from type casting the results were promising, but the public seemed to have a problem dealing with her when she made the occasional departure.
I enjoyed this book. It provided a lot of info about someone I knew little about. It introduced me to this lady's career and gave me a sense of who she was. I felt that I was at a disadvantage when reviewing this book because I had nothing else to compare it to. For what it's worth, the only thing that might have deterred me from reading this book was the very hefty price. I purchased this used at a seriously discounted price. I am passing it on to a friend who hopefully is better positioned to write a critical review of this book.

3rd time is also charming

Author Lentz has done interesting and good work on Lee Marvin and Korean War Movies - his 3rd published book on Gloria Grahame is also worthy of your reading time. Good pictures, lots of interesting info on her life and career. This book would be a great acquisition for those interested in Gloria or in Hollywood history

I loved this actress and reading a so thoroughly researched book on her work and films was a complete joy. The author is obviously as enamored of his subject as I am. One thing though... Mel Ferrer (who directed some of Grahame's scenes in "Macao") was not Jose Ferrer's brother... an odd and amusing error.
