The Diamond Sutra, or the "Perfection of Wisdom which cuts like a thunderbolt", is one of the cornerstone texts of Mahayana Buddhism and provides a summary of the core concepts of the Buddha. The Heart Sutra, perhaps the most important of all Buddhist texts, sets out to formulate the very "heart" or essence of perfect wisdom and is studied with special reverence in Zen monasteries and the Tibetan Buddhist lamaseries.

About the Author
A former publishing executive, John F. Thornton is a literary agent and co-editor of Tongues of Angels, Tongues of Men: A Book of Sermons. He lives in New York City.

Judith Simmer-Brown, Ph.D., is professor and chair of the religious studies department at Naropa University (formerly the Naropa Institute), where she has taught since 1978. She has authored numerous articles on Tibetan Buddhism, Buddhist-Christian dialogue, and Buddhism in America. She is an Acharya (senior teacher) in the lineage of Chogyam Trungpa. A practicing Buddhist since 1971, she lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Heart & Diamond reviewed

I am familiar with Edward Conze's translations and comments on the Diamond and Heart Sutras primarily through the 1958 edition of this work. First of all, these are scholarly translations and commentaries. The commentaries are logical and precise, as they need to be to get at the heart of the teaching, in particular, of the Heart Sutra. Conze states, correctly, that to understand the Heart Sutra one has to understand something about Abhidharma concepts. The Abhidharma texts represent early schools of thought in India regarding consciousness and read like a Sears catalog of psychological elements put into a moral context and including conditioned and unconditioned dharmas. The Heart Sutra is in part a response to Abhidharma; one which goes beyond it. Abhidharma is considered the "dry bones" of Zen for good reason. Nevertheless, there are equally good reasons why Shunryu Suzuki told his students at San Francisco Zen Center to study with Conze (advice which was followed). The Heart Sutra is such a pure and intense condensation of wisdom that the effort to understand it is repaid tenfold by even small glimpses of its meaning. It is paradoxical that the teaching of "form is emptiness, emptiness is form,"etc., is amenable to a logical approach, yet Conze is very effective at demonstrating that, at least for those of us who have not attained wisdom-that-goes-beyond (prajna), this is precisely the path to take. His analysis of the Sanskrit in the context of Buddhist logic unlocks a very fruitful path for following the meaning of the Heart Sutra. An openminded approach to Conze's translation and commentaries, applied with some determination and perseverance, is well worth the effort, both with the Diamond and the Heart Sutras, though perhaps more so with the latter. What hits us in the face at first as flatly contradictory reveals itself to be something more than we can imagine. Shunryu Suzuki told us that the "No" in the Heart Sutra is far more positive than any "Yes" could ever be. I haven't seen another approach to the Heart Sutra in print that equals Edward Conze's.

Two of the most well-known of Buddha's Sutras, the "Diamond Sutra" and "the Heart Sutra", are explained clearly and succintly in this concise volumne. Edward Conze translates directly from the original Sanskrit with care and insight, skillfully combining deeply obtuse concepts with a gentle, sensitive rye sense of humor. The piercing brevity of "The Heart Sutra" is an astonishingly remarkable 'tool' for helping us to change our behavior. It affords an opportunity for those seeking to return to their origin, to see and to understand their True Heart which is unsurpasssable, Perfected Wisdom.

Buddhist dialectics...

The Diamond Sutra and the Heart Sutra are two of the central texts of Mahayana Buddhism (which includes Zen Buddhism). They can be quite difficult and unapproachable for the Westerner who is not well versed in Buddhist terminology and Buddhist dialectics. That is why a volume like this has a great deal of value. Conze presents translations of the sutras and, interspersed with the translations, he offers his commentary.

In Conze's commentary he explains terms that the the reader might not already be familiar with, as well as background theories (such as the Abidhamma theories) that the texts take for granted. All of that is extremely helpful for the Western reader. It is important to realize, however, what this book is not. It is not a popular treatise on Buddhism. The reader who is looking for a basic introduction to Buddhism or a practical guide to meditation techniques should look elsewhere. This is a scholarly translation and commentary on the sutras.

I happen to think that the spread of Buddhism to the West is one of the most important historical events of the last century. Traditional religious belief, which tends to be based on some notion of a transcendent absolute, has been under attack from science, which tends to be based on an immanent worldview. This conflict between religion and science is profound and producing real and violent effects in the world. This is a problem that is demanding a solution.

I think that the Buddhist dialectic between the absolute and relative is the best chance we have at a genuine reconciliation between our deep religious impulses and yearnings and the insights of modern science. Ultimate reality, according to these sutras, is not a dharma or a no-dharma. In other words, it is not merely immanent, or identical with the world, but it is not something outside the world either, nor is it nothing. We cannot cling to any of those views.

This is a point that is difficult for those trained in the law of excluded middle to grasp, but, I genuinely believe it is the expression of a profound truth, and it is a truth we desperately need in the world today. If you are interested in such truths there is no better place to look than the Diamond and Heart Sutras, and Conze's translations and commentaries are quite successful in making the sutras accessible to those who lack the background knowledge that would come from living in a culture suffused with Buddhism.

a very good book in fluid mechanics, all the mathematical drivation included, it has many sloved example make the reader understand more from just the theories, only disadvandge is the quality of the book as paperback with less quality paper, this book in my opinion surpass many American text book in fluid mechanics used in USA universities.

Know why things are as they are

This book traces theology from the Early Church period through the Lutheran Reformation. People often wonder why different Christian groups differ from one another in belief. This book is a big help. Although not light reading, it shows how individual religious leaders emphasized some point in such a way that it bent what was taught and believed in various movements. It is a very good resource to have and to use.

A classic Lutheran view of the history of Christian theology

This is a review of the 1968 English translation of the 1966 3rd Swedish edition.

This great introductory work consists of 34 "shortish" chapters (the two longest being Augustine, pgs. 113-40 and Luther, pgs. 211-46) covering the history of Christian theology up to about the middle of the 20th century. It is written at about the college undergraduate level. The basic purpose of the work is described in the Forward to the 2nd ed.: "On this basis, the history of theology develops into a presentation of how the Christian rule of faith has been interpreted in history and within different groups

It is good to keep in mind the following biographical data on the author (from Wikipedia): "Bengt Hägglund (22 November 1920-8 March 2015) was a Swedish theologian. Hägglund, who is professor emeritus of Christian intellectual history at Lund University, has written several books, of which Teologins historia (English: History of Theology) is his most widely known work. The book, translated, inter alia, to English, German, Portuguese and Russian language, was first published in 1956." So he was part of the famous 20th century Swedish Lundensian theological movement. That included other giants like Bishop Anders Nygren and Bishop Gustaf Aulen, amongst so many others.

Thus the work has a Lutheran-centric worldview, esp. a Luther-centric view. But this is a good thing as it has Chpt. 26 "Reformation Theology in Lutheran Areas to the Formula of Concord, 1577", pgs. 271-78; Chpt. 27 "The Formula of Concord", pgs. 279-84; and Chpt. 30 "Lutheran Orthodoxy, pgs 299-324. To appreciate the Lutheran-centric view of the author, here is a key paragraph:

"With respect to its versatile comprehension of theological material and the breadth of its knowledge of the Bible, Lutheran orthodoxy marks the high water point in the entire history of theology. And it was not only the contemporary tradition or the next proceding tradition which provided the material for the great Lutheran doctrinal expositions of the 17th century, but to an even greater extent it was the Bible and patristic sources." (p. 303)

As the two Forwards discuss: "The addition of a brief summary of English theology--beginning with the Reformation [Chpt. 29]--represents the biggest change" to the 2nd Swedish edition, as does the new Chpt. 34 in the 3rd Swedish ed.

My only complaints: First, Hagglund has little to say about Eastern Christianity after Part I. Thus a giant like Gregory Palamas is not even mentioned. An unfortunate oversight that reportedly is rectified in the 2007 4th English ed. Second, Hagglund really doesn't say that much about the Swedish Church, esp. his own "school" of theology (Lundensian) from the 20th century. Third, there are NO footnotes or endnotes. Fifth, there is NO bibliography. So this can only be used as an introduction to the subject.

Purchased Kindle edition of this book for a course. When you look at the title and the picture of the book, they all say 4th edition. The Kindle version is the third edition. You can do better Amazon.

Lives up to my highest expectations!

If you've ever been to the Cinnamon snail, you know that their food is amazing. They ranked #1 place to eat in New York and #4 in the entire US on Yelp for 2014 and have a plethora of other awards. Adam Sobel is a culinary genius, and I do not say this lightly. This book has been the most highly anticipated cookbook on my list since 2011, because the snail has never produced anything that I didn't LOVE.

I'm pleased to report that the book is no exception!! I was worried that the food wouldn't taste as delicious as the food truck. Like the seitan, which could fool many carnivores. And oh, did it go above and beyond my highest expectations! Never has homemade seitan been so delicious.

As soon as the book was virtually delivered to my eagerly awaiting paws, I ran out to 24-hour Walmart to buy ingredients. The index, which you can view before buying the book, is positively delicious. I didn't see a single thing I didn't want to eat. Skimming through the index for the first time, I was extremely pleased to see the Vanilla Bourbon Creme Brulee donuts, which is one of their best sellers. That's where I started, because these donuts are from heaven. Crunchy, soft, sugary warm deliciousness... and my first try was just as good as from the truck. I will be making them at all of my future family holidays. I also made the Broccoli Beer Soup, Peking Seitan Bao Buns, Blueberry Lemon Cheesecake. I'll post pictures tonight. Everything was heavenly. I didn't even know I was capable of making food so delicious. This book is a total game changer for my home menu. I cannot wait to try all of the other recipes. As I was cooking, I read through the intro and got lots of warm fuzzies reading about how and why Adam learned to cook. So sweet.

One thing that I was worried about was that it wouldn't include some of my (less popular?) seasonal favorites. And although the book doesn't have some specific seasonal recipes such my all time favorite Hickory BBQ Seitan Sub, it does have all the elements there to make it, albeit with a little searching. The original sandwich on the menu read as follows: Hickory BBQ Seitan with Bourbon Braised Garlic Marinated Kale, Caramelized Onions, Coconut Bacon, and Horseradish Cream.

I used the following recipes to duplicate the sub of my dreams:
Brown Sugar Bourbon Glazed Seitan (132) with a few tablespoons of added BBQ sauce
Bourbon Blanched Mustard Greens (187) sub baby kale, added garlic and caramelized onions
I adapted the horseradish cream from the horseradish mustard cream in the perogie recipe and the aioli listed for the recipe.
And I used this (Coconut Bacon (2 Pack/Bags) - Enjoy Crunchy Coconut Chips With A Bacon Flavor - Gluten Free and Vegan Friendly Snack Food!) for bacon.

It was just divine. Buy this book. Never eat another animal product again.

Every dish in this book has like 8 steps

The recipes are truly unique, but incredibly difficult for an amateur cook. The only dish that is not too complicated is a soup, but I struggled to find anything within my skill level (which is average). My wife wouldn't eat the soup because it was pink and suffered from too much wine from 2 cups of wine during cooking. I have been cooking from 7 different vegan books (Isa Does It, Robinson, Thug Kitchen) for years now. Every dish in this book has like 8 steps, e.g. use food processor, saute something, then saute something else, then use blender for something else. I just became frustrated and exhausted and couldn't look at the book anymore. I'm trying to cook this while giving breakfast to the kids. Next time I'm in New York I'll try to find the Cinnamon Snail and enjoy the food. Everything looks delicious and amazing. It's just too complicated for home cooking. Adam Sobel is a genius, but I can't keep up.

There Are Chef's and Then There Are Culinary GODS!

I've been a fan of the folks behind the Cinnamon Snail Food Truck without ever having the privilege of eating from them. Their online presence as a vegan food truck made them endearing to say the least and the hope of "one day" being able to sample the delectable goods we've read about has always been a bucket list wish. Owner Adam Sobel put his priceless recipes to paper so that those of us unable to get to his truck can make it ourselves. Initially I was daunted because there were spices I've never heard of and I wasn't sure this home cook would have the skill required to pull these off. Anyone who is in the same mindset, slap yourself upside the head and wake up! Following these recipes has elevated my cooking beyond what I thought I could ever pull off. The flavors are combined in such a way that it becomes like a symphony in your mouth. I am constantly asking myself, "if it taste THIS good when I make it, what must it taste like from the Master himself?!" (All cooks have their own special touch, naturally.) Along with the recipes, we get the history behind the food truck's birth and all the snafu's they had to endure to make it happen. You come away from this not only championing his success but realize he is a great husband and father whose heart is in the right place and those within his sphere are very lucky indeed.

Kant is an important read. It is also fairly dense. This version is so full of typographic errors as to be nearly unreadable. I know that it's free, but this is ridiculous.

immanuel kant is very well versed and has an in depth knowledge of morality which he explains very well throughout the book. i reccommend it for anybody who is getting into philosophy or for someone who is a philosopher as a refresher. i thinks its more for the novice but a very enlightening read. included inside this is a three part explanation on morality.

Difficult but rewarding.

I haven't as yet begun to study "Fundamental Principles..." but I am currently reading, and listening to an audio book of Kant's - "Critique of Pure Reason".A warning.Do not attempt to read this book unless you have an extreme interest in Kant.It is extremely difficult to understand,but if you persevere you will eventually see the forest through the trees.There is something addictive and absorbing about this brilliant,but difficult to understand philosopher.In his own time one of Kant's colleagues told Kant that he feared for his sanity after reading one half of "Critique of Pure Reason".I thoroughly recommend this audio book to anyone interested in philosophy,but would also suggest that they find time to read the material as well.You will then begin to understand what a soaring brain this man had.

The best of its kind, but info overlaps his first two books

This is the best how-to write a novel in 30 days guide, and gives you everything you need to crank out a 50,000 word rough draft with plenty of inspirational hand-holding AND nuts-and-bolts "rules" (I prefer the latter). That said, there is a substantial amount of overlap with Gerke's earlier 5-star how-to books, The First 50 Pages: Engage Agents, Editors and Readers, and Set Your Novel Up For Success and Plot Versus Character: A Balanced Approach to Writing Great Fiction, so this new book will be of less use to you if you already have those--unless you're still stuck.

Note that to use his included character personality creation system to its fullest, you'll also need a copy of Please Understand Me II: Temperament, Character, Intelligence. He gives a rough overview of it in this book (and his earlier Plot vs. Character). Not only is this system great at fleshing out how your characters see and react to the world you create for them, but take the personality test yourself and be amazed at how much you find out about why you are the way you are. It's not perfect, but it's still incredibly accurate and can change your life!

Jeff Gerke is one of the absolute best writing coaches I've ever read. He's easy to read, with a fun, casual tone. He doesn't talk down to you or use a ton of big words. He makes you want to learn, to get excited, and breaks each phase of writing your novel into bite-sized chunks he calls "victories." Because when you're feeling down, you can look back on all your victories and be encouraged, and know if you've gotten this far, you can certainly finish the darn thing. Also, Gerke keeps your expectations reasonable. He says don't expect a masterpiece in a month. The whole point is simply to get your novel written, then worry about revision and polishing it later. He provides a lot of great tools along the way, and tells you not to get paralyzed by the so-called "rules" of fiction writing--that even the experts disagree. The only rule you must obey is to entertain your reader from beginning to end. Other "rules" can certainly help, but don't let them straitjacket your creativity or slow you down. Besides, you can always fix that stuff later if you have to (like stripping out adverbs ending in "-ly," or removing all semicolons to make your sentences faster and more punchy, stuff like that).

Misleading Title, and Probably for Novice Writers

I received "Write Your Novel" as a Christmas present because my family knows I enjoy writing flash fiction and am preparing to write my own novel. All the help I can get is a good place to start, right? I read through "Write Your Novel" in a couple days and I found it to be a collection of basic advice for writers who really don't know where to start. I thought that the chapters on how to market your book to agents and publishers was very useful, but the rest of it I found to be very basic, "101" level content.

The author spends most of the chapters showing and telling the reader how to write an outline; how to develop characters; how to write inner and outer journeys; and how to do small tricks to help the reading process move along. Most of this book was - for me - not revelation but confirmation: I'm already doing, or have already done, most of the things the author advises. Again, for folks who have no substantial writing experience and aren't sure how to "build" the skeleton of a book, I think this might be exactly the instruction they need to make their novel happen. But for the rest of us who know how to write an outline, diagram chapters, develop characters, and explore inner and outer challenges? It's probably too basic.

My chief complaint about this book is that it's misleading. The title says, "Write your novel in a month," but the author doesn't actually teach the reader to write a novel in a month; instead, the author teaches the reader to set a daily word goal and write like a crazy person in order to complete the bulk of a first draft within a month.

This book is not: "Get an idea, write an outline, do research, develop characters, write a complete first draft, edit your first draft, edit your second draft, edit your third draft, and send to an agent."

This book is: "If you already have an idea, and have already done your research, and have already developed your characters, then you can write most of your first draft in a month and at a later time go back and edit your first, second, and third drafts before you scout an agent to market your book."

So yeah, I don't think "Write Your Novel" is a bad book, I just think that the title is misleading and that it's probably written for novice writers who genuinely don't know where to begin or how to complete the writing process.

Great for writing in a month or a year

Although I am not participating in Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) or even trying to fast pace a novel, this book has a lot of valuable information and insight into getting organized in the writing process, figuring out plot and is also great for learning character development. I'm not a seasoned writer but it is something I have always loved to do. Now that I am trying my hand at getting serious and writing a full length novel, this book has been incredibly helpful.

Hey! It's Ian from The Boss series!!!! Story offers lots of romance and humor with deep family and spiritual components.

First Time is a contemporary adult romance written by Abigail Barnette. Note: This novel is based off of characters featured in Ms. Barnette's amazing The Boss series, but I don't think you would be missing out horribly if you were to read it as a standalone novel.

As soon as I read that Ms. Barnette was publishing a new book, I one-clicked the preorder without any question. I am a loyal follower of her The Boss series and when I saw this was Ian's story I was sooooo excited. Ian isn't necessarily a main character in the series but he has had his moments in the spotlight and his character has definitely worked his way into my heart ♥. First Time adds gorgeous layering to Ian's character via family and spiritual elements and he is without a doubt the leading man in this book.

Ian's character is not ego-driven, he's not a millionaire or some cocky bastard...he's a fifty-three year old, down-to-earth man who is generous, loyal, protective, and just an all-around great guy. So as a reader, I want the best for him. His love interest, Penny, is a beautiful, sweet, and honest gal who I immediately liked. It's hard not to.

Oh...did I mention she's twenty-two?

Yes, I just wrote that bit with a raised eyebrow and cocked head. I'll let you know up front that I'm a hypocrite for judging. The main characters in The Boss series have a huge chunk of age difference between them and I have yet to bat an eye. The difference? Maturity. Sophie is a young but emotionally strong woman. Penny? Well, I started out loving her. After all, anyone who can make sweet, self-depreciating Ian feel like a superstar gets a thumbs up from me. But after the initial infatuation wore off and I got to know Penny a bit more, I was like...Ian, are you serious???? She is a sweetheart for sure, but for a twenty-two year old, she has got some major emotional baggage and overreaction tendencies. As a reader (and huge fan of Ian's), I don't support this pairing. She's a young, hot thing with a good heart, but she needs to grow up some before I approve.

Regardless of some negatively noted above, I still gave First Time four stars. There was a lot of humor and for a good portion of this book, I literally could not put it down. Crushes and new love can be so intoxicating and all of that positive energy was palpable - I was in a constant state of smile. That kind of experience is damn hard to ignore :)

Disclaimer: Ms. Barnette has published two different perspectives for this story: one in Ian's and one in Penny's. I have not yet read Penny's perspective, but based on Ms. Barnette's storytelling talent, I won't be surprised at all if I change my mind about Penny's character once I'm done.

Not a favorite of mine. Ian wasn't sexy enough and I couldn't relate to Penny and her "virgin" status -- yet she'd done everything else! It has its moments, but isn't as sexy as Barnette's other lovely books -- notably The Boss.

I really enjoyed Ian's story and there was just the right amount ...

I really enjoyed Ian's story and there was just the right amount of humor thrown in for good measure. The sex scenes were a little while coming for reasons made clear once you read the book. I've enjoyed the Boss Series and this was a nice addition by expanding on characters we've met before. Don't go hating on me but the reason I did not give Ian's Story a 5 Star review was I was conflicted with all the religious references included. I know it was part of Ian's character and he was a practicing Catholic (well he tried to be), I was maybe a tad uncomfortable having that incorporated along with erotic sex scenes. It seemed like Ian was a walking/talking double standard. Still a great read and I'm looking forward to reading Penny's Story.
