Jason Rutherglen is a software architect at Think Big Analytics and specializes in Big Data, Hadoop, search, and security.
Ryan Tabora is a Data Developer at Think Big Analytics, a big data consulting firm based out of Mountain View, CA. He acts as both a developer and as a consultant. As a consultant, he spends time working face to face with Fortune 500 clients to help uncover value from their big data. As a developer, he writes code for applications using cutting edge technology like Cassandra, Solr, HBase, and Hadoop. Applications he's written include a RESTful interface using Solr, HBase, and Hadoop to search log data and a few MapReduce applications that can be used to dynamically reindex Solr based off of an HBase table. He also spends time developing and delivering training material as part of the Think Big Academy. Aside from work, he plays bass guitar, reads comic books, and hangs out with his two dachshunds Brutus and Puck.
Jack Krupansky is a freelance software developer with a Masters degree in Computer Science from Stevens Institute of Technology and over 35 years of experience developing and using a wide range of software technologies, including compilers and programming tools, graphics and graphical user interfaces, CAD/CAM, document image processing, and traditional databases, but for the past five years he has focused on the problems of Search, Discovery, Relevance, and Big Data, particularly using the Apache open source technologies of Lucene, Solr, Cassandra, and the rest of the Apache open source ecosystem. He has been a contract developer for the Northern Light search engine back in the dot-com days, Lucid Imagination (now LucidWorks) for their Enterprise Search product, and more recently at DataStax for their enterprise search product that uses Solr. He is the inventor of the Liana object-oriented programming language for GUI development and the Base Technology open source software agent server.

RIP - But Spinoff available on Lulu.com

As one of the original three authors of this book, it saddened me to see that it never made the light of day. We got a long way into the project and realized it was too big an effort to fit into the publisher's traditional model. The contract got cancelled.

But, the good news is that a spinoff of the book, focused on Solr alone, entitled "Solr 4.x Deep Dive" is now available on Lulu.com - just search for "Solr" and it will be the single search result.

The book is now in Early Access, and will be for some time. Current at over 1,100 pages and counting.

Beautiful, memorable, meaningful

Aria's mother is dead. She lives with her father, who is battling his own deamons and is far from being a reliable parent. Aria's lonely, often even scared for her safety, lost. She dreams of moving away from home and starting over. But there are secrets in her past, secrets involving her mother's death and her father's descent into alcoholism, secrets she needs to deal with before she can ever truly be free. And it will take the healing power of love to give her the strength to tackle them.

Porcelain Keys is a beautifully written, lyrical tale of love, healing power of music, grief, broken trust, redemption, staying true to yourself and following your dreams. Crafted with care and passion, it's a very emotional story that pulls on your heartstrings and fills your soul with gently flowing melody. Sarah Beard weaves together a mesmerizing, gut-wrenching family drama, captivating mystery and heartbreaking love story, and she enriches it further with themes of music and art. The result is breathtaking. I absolutely loved every second of this book. I wouldn't call it a quick, breeze-through kind of read, but it was certainly a completely absorbing, intensely moving one.

The character development was simply phenomenal. I loved Aria. I thought she was a brilliant, realistically drawn and fresh character. Her emtions were real, and it didn't take long for me to connect with her. I appreciated her vibrant personality and quiet strength of character. She was a very sensitive person - one that would feel more than other people in her life, and possibly understand more, too - but she wasn't weak or whiny. She never gave up on her dreams, she was persistent and not afraid to take risks. Life was never easy on her, but every time she'd fall down, she'd pick herself up, dust herself off and try to move on. I admired that about her.

Thomas' character was a fantastic one, too, and his presence in the story - and in Aria's life - was crucial. He was a very positive, caring and warm type of person, and it's thanks to him Aria opened up and stood up to her dad. He was her cataclyst and her island of peace. At the same time, though, I really loved that their relationship wasn't rushed. They were obviously curious about each other and attracted to one another from the very beginning, but there was also a certain amount of hesitation and shyness involved. Uncertainty. The build up was pleasantly slow and therefore more realistic than in a typical YA novel. I personally loved that about this book!

While the story centres around Aria and Thomas' relationship and the way these two slowly opened up and healed each other, there are other, very important themes tackled in this book as well, including (but not limited to) physical and emotional abuse, alcoholism, loss, grief and violence. The plot line is layered with important messages, insightful observations and eye-opening moments of clarity. It's a very emotional read, but also smart and powerful one, and I'm certain that you'll be reeling from it for a very long time. It's definitely not a cliched boy-meets-girl book, no, Porcelain Keys is highly original, deeply atmospheric and profoundly meaningful. And it's not a book you'll read, put down and forget about, but one that will stay with you. One you'll want to get back to time and time again.

This book deserves a special place on your bookshelf and a special place in your heart.

Very Emotionally Gripping! I bought 5 copies and gave them out!!

VERY EMOTIONALLY GRIPPING!!!!! I would give it 6 stars if I could!

You know how when you start a book and it grabs you in the beginning and you can’t stop until it’s done?
Then you know how when you finish a book and you can’t stop thinking about it for days?
Well, that’s how it was with me and this book!I bought 5 copies and gave them out!

This book has all your emotions going. There is sorrow, guilt, forgiveness, grieving, overwhelming heartache, messed up family, abuse, unrequited love, second chances, musically gifted talents, artistically gifted talents, loss of family and finding a new family. I was overcome with emotions many times, crying, laughing, and sighing. There was one time where my heart was beating so hard (yes, I know it is just a book but that’s how it grabbed me) when something happened that I didn’t yet expect. Then our dinner was ready and I was agitated because, I wanted to see how it would play out, but I had to feed the family! Gah! When we were done eating, I picked up my kindle which was on the table, and started reading again without putting away my dishes. My hubby silently cleaned everything up for me. I just couldn’t let it go.

Aria has had it rough since her mom died. Her father becomes abusive and fails her terribly as a father. He is not the same father he was when Aria’s mom was alive. Her dad won’t allow her to play her piano that her mother gave her lessons on or even to take lessons or allow her to expand on her talents by writing either. He has hidden away all her mother’s things as well. Whenever he finds out that she played the piano, he would hit her and she would go to the neighbor’s tree house where she keeps a sleeping bag and some supplies. Then one morning in the tree house, Aria hears someone coming up the tree. She is afraid that her dad finally found her hiding place, but it turns out to be the grandson (whose name is Thomas) of the owner of the house. He sees the bruises, but he doesn’t push her to explain. They become friends and then more.

Thomas has his own secrets. They don’t fully surface until the end.

Aria plays the piano and where I don’t; I could totally understand and visualize what the author was trying to convey in her music. Emotions come with the music and Aria would use those emotions while playing the piano until she wanted to put the emotions away. They were too painful. Her teachers tell her everyone has tragedy and you have to focus on that why you play certain pieces otherwise it is just mechanical. I could feel it while reading. Weird, but the writing was so good, I could feel it too.

I wished I had highlighted one section of Thomas and Aria talking about their “Even if”‘s. If you read it, highlight it because it is a statement that will capture your heart.

This booked had me gripped from the first chapter. It is one of my new favorite love stories. The story was beautifully written and will leave you thinking about Aria and Thomas long after you have finished reading. This will be the story that I give to all my friends.

This is an important and topical little story. Can be read in just a few hours but packs a huge punch. Many of us sense that something is deeply amiss in our culture. We have a yearning to thrive that seems just out of the reach of most of us whether that is materially or spiritually. What to do about it, at the level of the individual? This seems like a good start.

On Genius and the Workings of the Creative Process

Nowadays, there is much discussion in the public domain on the concept of genius, on Creativity and on Innovation. We see people like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and many others being labelled as 'creative' or 'genius-like' or 'innovative'. At the same time, we do not see much elaboration on the precise reasons for marking these individuals out for such special mention except by reiterating the products and ideas for which they are responsible and how much their thinking diverges from the mainstream. What we don't find is a substantive discussion on what this 'Creative Process' really is and how it actually works and what its psychological foundations are. It is this quest which brought me to read this book.

I have always enjoyed reading Sudhir Kakar's insights into cultural psychology, mysticism and psychoanalysis. When I saw that he was one of the authors of this book, I wanted to see what his insight into the subject is. However, it turned out that this book is a collection of six essays on Creativity from six different authors, with Kakar contributing just one, on the Indian perspective of the creative artist. Three articles dwell on the cross-cultural views on Creativity, one each on the Indian, Western and the Chinese. Two others are in the inter-disciplinary perspective from Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience. The final article by James Kaufman looks at Creativity through a generalist approach. Overall, we come across many definitions on what is creative and some approaches to understanding the creative process itself.

The Western perspective is dealt with by co-author Günter Blamberger who suggests that the West has always set wrong priorities by focusing on the personal origin of Creativity , leading to hopeless aporias and myths. The West has a tradition of seeing Creativity as a triad of divine inspiration, mastery of the rules of the domain and scholarly knowledge. Blamberger proposes that we must bid farewell to this concept of 'Genius' and move away from singular creatorship and towards viewing Creativity as an Experience and as a Process. Today's creative practices are mostly processes based on division of labor within collectives and Creativity itself must be viewed as an inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural question.

Sudhir Kakar presents the Indian perspective on artistic creativity based on the classical treatise on the Performing Arts, namely 'Natya Shastra', written around 200 BCE, and on the modern works of renowned art historian, Ananda Coomaraswamy (1877-1947). In the Indian view of the creative artist, he is not a flawed being or prone to melancholia or madness. Rather, to be truly creative, it was necessary for individual personality traits and complexes to be transcended. Coomaraswamy formulates it as '..the Indian artist, though a person, is not a personality'. Creative Imagination is an inborn faculty due to impressions of past births that is so strong in the artist that it responds to the slightest stimuli which are usually ignored by others. Kakar wonders as to how many contemporary Indian artists share this view of the artist as emotionally balanced and artistic creativity as a matter of connecting with the transcendent, spiritual unconscious.

The Chinese perspective of Creativity is outlined by Weihua Niu simply as the very nature of everlasting interaction between the creator and the context, as something evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The focus of Creativity in the Confucian outlook is on novelty and appropriateness, where appropriateness is understood as fitting according to the changing context in a collaborative manner, given a specific situation. On the other hand, the Taoist view of Creativity is to make a connection between oneself and nature, possibly by immersing oneself through meditation.

In the inter-disciplinary discussion, I liked the essay by Margaret Boden on 'Creativity as Neuroscientific Mystery'. Boden says that there are three types of creativity, namely Combinational, Exploratory and Transformational. They are explained as follows:
Combinational Creativity is the generation of unfamiliar combinations of familiar ideas. A scientific example would be viewing the Atom through the Solar system model.
Exploratory Creativity is to use existing rules to generate novel structures. Examples would be to write a new Computer program using a known programming language or writing a new essay in English or creating a new painting in a known style such as Impressionist.
Transformational Creativity is the most exciting of all in that it breaks culturally sanctioned rules within a domain and leads to the creation of a novel idea which seems 'Impossible'. One can think of many examples in Science and in the Arts like Literature and Music.
Boden says that these three forms of Creativity involve different types of psychological processes and that Combinational Creativity is within reach of Neuroscience today. As for Exploratory and Transformational, she says that the human brain is a Connectionist system and we need to understand much better than we do today as to how 'connectionism' can emulate a von Neumann machine before coming to a Neuroscientific view of these two types of Creativity.
Most of us can probably feel good about having experienced some aspect of Exploratory Creativity in our lives and some might have indulged in Combinational as well.

As I came to the last essay in the book, the creative process still remained largely an enigma. Still, the essays provoke our mind and induces us to explore further.
