Bullied, by Jeff Erno

Every day, all over the country, teenagers struggle with the realities of bullying. Tormented, ridiculed, and beaten—simply for being who they are—these teens face alienation, humiliation, and even the explicit assertion that they have somehow brought this upon themselves, that they should just blend in. Bullied is a series of short stories exploring the world of these teens from several different viewpoints: the victim, the bully, the gay bystander, the straight friend, the concerned parent.

Closeted Bryan wonders why Christian Michaelson doesn't just try to blend in if he hates being bullied so much. Star athlete David isn't a homophobe—after all, he's not afraid of anything. Jonathan, a Christian fundamentalist, must weigh the Bible against peer pressure and what he knows is right when he discovers his childhood friend is gay. Bully victim Chase Devereaux finds an unexpected ally in a brave fellow student. A single mom struggles to accept the reality that her only son is gay. Two tough gay teens are forced to confront their own inner demons when tragedy befalls a classmate they failed to help. And overweight Kirby finds the strength of character to make a friend, which leads to a lifestyle change and a chance at love. Each character grows as an individual as he or she comes to terms with what it means to be a gay teenager in America.

Different Perspectives, The Same Struggle
By kwriter07
I was immediately drawn to the premise of "Bullied," a collection of short stories told from different perspectives, but all centering around the bullying gay teens go through in high school. It was clear that Erno is passionate about this subject, and in terms of a goal to portray the hellish experience of being bullied, and that it is something that should be stopped, I believe the project stands as a success.

Although the concept of having different perspectives from students of different social standings (and a concerned mother) really intrigued me, I wish there had been a little more variety. The gay students who are bullied tend to fit the same mold, shy and somewhat effeminate, enduring the bullying by sinking into themselves so they are practically isolated from everyone else, save for one or two female friends. This archetype is undoubtedly an easy target, and thus it makes sense for Erno to feature them prominently as the subject of bullying, but I think a little more variety would have illuminated the struggle.

Despite these students' best efforts to "man up," or imitate their male peers in order to make themselves look less vulnerable, they can't help who they are. I love that Erno is celebrating these individuals (and have read his blog to know that he enjoys reading about more effeminate protagonists). But I felt like the stories were getting a little repetitive with people telling the gay teen that he was choosing to make himself a victim, and that deliberately being more masculine wouldn't make him such a target. It's stories like the final one, starring Kirby, who is both overweight and gay, and suffers bullying primarily from his best friend, that really hit home. It was simple in its delivery, didn't feel too preachy, and provided a different viewpoint than the rest of the stories.

In addition, the story of the single mom was enjoyable simply because it was told from a different place from the rest of the stories, and it offered a chance to see how the bullying and coming out process affects a parent. The way the mom realized she had missed all the "signs," which were pretty much all points of femininity in her son, kind of irked me because it seemed to hit the stereotype home a bit too much (the stereotype that I wish had been broken more in this collection of stories), and although I applaud the son for finally standing up to his mom, it did come off pretty preachy. Something simpler would have been more effective.

Nonetheless, as a collection of stories that aim to illuminate the consequences and effects of bullying, I think "Bullied" serves its purpose well. I believe toning things down a little in certain areas, and providing a little more variety between the bullying arcs would make these stories stand out even more, but I fully support Erno's efforts, and hope that all who read these short stories take away even just a little of the experience that gay teens go through, and how damaging bullying really is.

2011 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention
By Elisa
I saved this one for last because I was a little afraid that I wouldn't be able to stop crying. It is a subject matter that is so relevant and can be handled either too stridently or maudlin. Jeff really captured the voices of young people -- all the stories seemed so authentic and realistic. Excellent all around.

A MUST READ!!
By Darice Robertson
The author did not write this particular book for his own profit. He wrote it to help others be aware of how serious bullying really is. I very much enjoy Jeff Erno's style of writing. It is very real to life, and yet, gentle too. This book talks about a subject so near and dear to the author's heart, as well as many others' hearts. I strongly feel that there is NEVER any reason to be mean to someone, physically or verbally! I do, however, believe that there are times when we will have to hurt someone in self defense or to defend another person. Yes, there is a difference. This book helped me understand something I never had to go through. I mean, yes, I was bullied when very young, but it didn't continue on into high school, and...there was no way to cyber bully at that time either. It did leave lasting scars that I've had to work through. I am so thankful to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for loving me no matter what.
