Sorry, I did not really enjoy this one...It was a short story, so I understand how difficult it must be to strike a balance between keeping the story short and sweet, but also revealing enough information to draw a reader in. For me, this just did not have that balance. I couldn't get lost in this book like I usually enjoy doing. It seemed disjointed and rushed.

I wasn't very invested in the characters because they just weren't developed--there was no depth to them. Therefore, I didn't really care what happened to them. The events were so rushed and the chapters ended so abruptly that it felt disjointed to me. I didn't feel like there was time for the story to develop. It seemed like a list of events,there was no natural flow to the plot.

On a positive note, I did think the story ended in the best way it could have.

About the Author
George E. Andrews is Evan Pugh Professor of Mathematics at the Pennsylvania State University. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, the Principal Lecturer at a Conference Board for the Mathematical Sciences meeting, and a Hedrick Lecturer for the MAA. Having published extensively on the theory of partitions and related areas, he has been formally recognized for his contribution to pure mathematics by several prestigious universities and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA).

Kimmo Eriksson is Professor of Mathematics at Mälardalen University College, where he has served as the dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology. He has published in combinatorics, computational biology and game theory. He is also the author of several textbooks in discrete mathematics and recreational mathematics, and has received numerous prizes for excellence in teaching.

A Beautiful Presentation of Mathematical Reasoning

This is a wonderful little book about a very simple mathematical object known as the "integer partition". The concept is simple: a partition of a positive integer is the set of positive integers that when summed give that number. (i.e. one integer partition of 6 is [5, 1] another is [3, 2, 1]). Order is unimportant so [5,1] and [1,5] are the same partition.

Amazingly this simple idea gives rise to many rich investigations that are the basis for this book. Many of these relate to "counting" the number of partitions with a given property and relating the number of partitions with various properties to one another. In fact, the mere counting of the number of partitions of a large integer, like 200, requires a foray into generating functions, an extremely important area of combinatorics. The formal properties of integer partitions have been investigated for over 200 years by some of the brightest lights in the mathematical constellation, such as Euler and Ramanujan. One of the authors (Andrews) is probably the current leading expert in this field.

Using integer partitions as a starting point the authors take the reader into many areas of mathematics (for example, generating functions, bijective proofs, Ferrers graphs and partially ordered sets). Each chapter also provides a selection of graded exercises ranging from the simple to problems that in some cases would be considered research areas. An outline of the answers to problems is provided in the back of the book. Working the problems will certainly give your powers of reasoning a real workout.

I am not particularly skilled at mathematics, however, I found the discussion relatively easy to follow although most topics require serious study if a full understanding is to be had. I would think that this book would certainly appeal to the math hobbyist, but could easily be the basis for a semester seminar for the advanced undergraduate.

Truly great introduction to one aspect of additive number theory

One of my favorite books. There is variety in the discussion, but the account is entirely coherent and self-contained, touching on a series of beautiful results. This is one of the most perfect books for an undergraduate thesis, I would imagine. The ideas are sophisticated, but they don't bog the reader down with technicalities or notation. It gives the reader what they need as smoothly as possible, then they're prepared to tackle some of the open problems discussed or go their own way. Best introduction I've seen to q-series. A decent introduction to generating functions (not the best, but for most students probably self-contained). Researchers unfamiliar with this area would love it too I bet because there's so little fuss. Lastly, though this is more tangential, the font is well chosen for a pleasing, visually appealing reading experience. If this book isn't on my desk, then it's under my pillow. Highly recommended.

Really like it, but cost is a bit high

If you like to dabble in combinatorics, this is a very nice self-contained book on integer partitions, written at the undergraduate level. There is a lot of expository material and examples, with exercises as well, and the proofs are easy to read and follow.

The book is pretty thin, which in my opinion isn't a bad thing since they do a very good concise treatment of all the major topics. My only problem with this book is the cost on Amazon right now. I can access a university library so that's how I found it but I would like to have a copy for myself but wouldn't pay more than $10 or $15 for it, and if you ever see it I think you will agree. It should be a Dover book.

Robust and H-infinity Control examines both the theoretical and practical aspects of H-infinity control from the angle of the structural properties of linear systems.

About the Author

Associate Professor Chen's research interests are in linear systems, robust control theory and control applications. He has published 7 monographs. He has served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, and Asian Journal of Control. Currently, he is serving as an Associate Editor of Systems and Control Letters, and Control and Intelligent Systems. Before returning to Singapore, Professor Chen worked in the US (New York and Washington State Universites) and in Australia. He lectures on several courses, both undergraduate and graduate.

The book is incredibly helpful, but without a working cd, is pretty much useless. I emailed amazon back, and all they did was refer me to another number. Other than that everything is good.

The authors do an excellent job of describing how the potential escape of top ...

I did not purchase this book through amazon but I have read it and the research is second to none. The other reviewers comment about Bormanns DNA does not take into account that it was the mDNA that was tested against a relative as no Bormann DNA is known to exist. Also it it is quite possible that this was anticipated by Heinrich Mueller and carried out as one of his many deceptions. According to Paul Manning in his book, "Martin Bormann: Nazi in exile", Mueller is said to have gathered up concentration camp inmates who had facial structures resembling that of Bormann, Stumpfegger and others. Their dentitions were altered to match that of the fleeing top nazis. Its also important to point out that if in fact the skull found by the German authorities was that of Martin Bormann it has been reported that it was encased in red clay that is completely exotic to Europe but widely found in South America. The authors do an excellent job of describing how the potential escape of top nazis may have been conducted and the book is very well written. As companion reading to those interested I would suggest the above book by Manning as well as "Rat Lines" and "Unholy Alliance" by Peter Levenda as well as "Nazi International" by Dr. Joseph P. Farell.

Historical comments regarding Grey Wolf

Intriguing notion but there were some key historical flubs. Additionally a lot of the information is not substantiated. The biggest problem is the assumption that Bormann escaped as well. That is simply not true as his body was found in Berlin at a construction site in the 1990's. Verified through DNA.

A linchpin for improv on guitar

There are some excellent guitar books, many good ones, and a lesser number of truly useful ones. This book is solidly in the latter category as something that can make a difference in your playing in a month. Sometimes the simplicity of a concept is its strength, and this book has a strong and effective methodology for any genre of music. I need to mention that this book goes well with Joe Negri's "A Commonsense Approach to Improvisation". Both these small books are oriented to a triadic approach and pack a lot of effective methodology into a small space. "Mini Arpeggios" also fleshes out Sokolow's Fretboard Roadmaps series, and is great prep work if you want to tackle Garrison Fewell's Jazz opus, "A Melodic Approach to Improvisation ".

Paul Musso's book provides a functional, accessable and playable bridge to understanding the fingerboard and getting into the harmony and away from scales and patterns. I think this is good.

A love story and lots of sailing

Years ago, when I was growing up, I read the account of Robin Lee Graham as the young man who sailed around the world alone, and also got married along the way, in three installments of the National Geographic, circa 1965-1970. These articles so affected me that I also wanted to sail around the world. However, as I read this book it soon became apparent to me that this book is also an account of a true life love story, between Robin and Patti, both with simple values and needs, in sharp contrast to most people who are primarily concerned with money and social status. They were deep in love and would, and did, do anything for each other.
Robin alone, and later with Patti, sailed to some of the most beautiful places on Earth, I think they must have enough memories for 20 lifetimes. The writing style makes you feel that you are right there with them.
The pictures included in this book are poor black and white, but as I remember, the National Geographic articles included excellent color photographs, it would do you well to find those issues.
As for me, I never did get to sail around the world, a little thing called life intervened, the grind and all that! I did take a sailing class through a local university in the summer of '77, even got an "A" in the class, but this pales in comparison to the daring sailing of Robin Graham. Sometimes, during trips to Florida I gaze at ocean-going yachts at wharfs, and yes, the dream is still alive, thanks to Dove

Read this on a whim. I remember when Robin took off on this journey but did not know what became of him. A well written journey at sea with plenty of personality and characters to remember fondly.
